Traduction des miracles et miracle de la traduction : T. H. Huxley traducteur engagé
Résumé
Thomas H. Huxley is not well known as a translator, but the Histoire de la translation des bienheureux martyrs S. Marcellin et S. Pierre (History of the Translation of the Blessed Martyrs S. Marcellinus and S. Peter) by Eginhard, which he partly translated into English and included in the article ‘The Value of Witness to the Miraculous’ (1889), is worth examining. Published in Nineteenth Century, the contribution is part of a fundamental debate on the revealed character of the Christian religion that Huxley leads partly against the religious world. Fragmentary, based on Teulet’s translation into French and inscribed within W.K. Clifford’s ethics of belief, it enables Huxley to invalidate the value of Eginhard’s testimony. Always commented on, his translation also serves as a cover for the real object of Huxley’s questioning: the New Testament.
